FINAL PRESENTATION


FINAL FOR DSGD 83

Your final for this class is at 7:15 AM ON MAY 21, 2012.

For your final you are to create a presentation of the work you did in this semester. You may use either InDesign or PowerPoint to layout your various projects. Then, you are to burn a CD for me to keep. Your artwork should also be printed out and put into a One inch black binder that you will present to the class, at the same time you give your final presentation. Your presentation should be no more than ten minuets. Long.

The projects you are to include in your final presentation should be the following:

Using Indesign create a six page music cd. That option is under the create new document menu. It can be any artist that you like. It should contain a title page and several images as well as list of songs. You could include a bio of the performers too.

Flip Book Assignment


Flip Book Assignment:

With this assignment you are to create a flip book. Please make object/artwork where the movement 
evolves from one image into another.

You may use any one of the three software programs you have learned in DSDG 83
or any combination of the, as long at they achieve your aim.

Once you have your idea for the project make several thumbnail drawings
of your ideas and show them to me for feedback. You should also be doing research
using the Internet to determine how best to construct your flipbook.

This project will be due the last day of class. Not to be confused with the final date.

The number of pages shall be determined by your concept and the way you create your final flipbook. Also you will have to determine the weight of the paper and the binding.

Color Matters Brochure

Create a 15 page brochure in InDesign that you will incase all of your color matters projects. This document should have the following items in its design:


  • The pages need to be numbered.
  • There should be two master pages. 
  • At least two or three text wrap around features.
  • A minimum of six or seven images.
  • At least three different pantone colors.
  • A minimum of three different style-sheets.
  • Several captions under photos.
  • One text wrap around a text box.

Color Matters Project













The following in-class projects should be in your color matters folder:

1.) Traditional color wheel.
2.) Matisse Project where you use the trace tool to change each color in the artwork to its complementary color.
3.) RGB and CYMK Color wheels.
4.) Abstract paintings using various shapes to create a composition. Colors chosen from a photo of nature.

Matisse Assignment









Download an image by Matisse from his Jazz Series and use the trace tool to select the various colored selections. Once that is done change the color to its complementary color. Put both the original image and the complementary one next to each other on a 8" x 11" document.

Printing Lab Hours

PRINTING LAB HOURS

MW is 8:30-10:30; 12:30-5:30
(the lab hours has be cut down due to the budget cut.)
Each students can only make 30 print per semester.
As we are trying to save ink and paper, officially students are only allowed to print during their class time.

Clipping path project

Create a 81/2" x 11" document and place a selection using the clipping path feature I taught you using Photoshop. Then, you are to import that image into Illustrator and wrap Lorem ipsum text around the selected image and create a colored back down by making a box and sending it to the back. There should be no white bounding box around your image.

This will be due on Monday and presented on screen. Good luck.

Collage Assignment










Select a myth, legion or fairytale and using Illustrator illustrate it using at least of seven images. You should also you the features clipping mask and the feather tool on at least one of the images, This assignment is due Monday and we will be projecting them on screen.

Three shapes within four squares.












Again create four boxes and within each place three different shapes. You are to arrange the three shapes to makes:
Box One to have all of the shapes have equal visual weight
Box Two to have the triangle shape be dominate.
Box three to place the triangle so that it is alienated from all the other shapes.
Box four to create a figure ground design.




Line Within Four Boxes













Create for boxes that are 3.5" x 3.5" and within those boxes make four lines. The first box should be with horizontal lines. The second with vertical ones and the Fourth with diagonal ones. In the remaining box use any combination of all three directions.


Typography Assignment










Create a new document and spell out the word Typography, and then identify all the parts of the word with arrows. Also include examples of Serif and Sans Serif.

Grid One and Grid Two









You are to create two grids using Illustrator. The first one should be using a one inch grid and them placing different shapes to create a repeating patter.

For the second grid, you will again use your rulers and guides in Illustrator to lay out a 81/2" x 11" grid. But in the second grid, I would like you to make a progressive repeating pattern.

There is to be a third grid and I will go over that one in class next class time.

Digital Applications Basic Syllabus

SAN JOSE STATE UNVERSITY

Corse: DIGITAL APPLICATION BASICS (DSGD 83 –Section 4)

Class meets: 8:30 AM – 11:20 AM (Starting 1/25/2012), Room 201

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a fundamental course using features and functions inherent within Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and InDesign. Combining theoretical elements and practical experience in the use of these powerful digital programs. Students will explore the various functions inherent within each program. The content of this class will also include basic design principles and also color theory. This knowledge base should help to prepare students for more advanced classes in graphic design and other design fields.

CLASS PROJECTS:

Each class will begin with lecture, demonstration, discussion, or any combination of the forgoing. There will be at least one project assigned each week.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW!

It is very simple. I expect all of you to be respectful of myself, of your peers and of the learning environment and to take responsibility for your own actions and behaviors. Any behavior that interferes with either (1) my ability to conduct the class or (2) the ability of other students (or yourself) to profit from the instructional program will not be tolerated.

This includes:

  • Arriving late to class.
  • Disruptive entrances and exits during lecture, if you must leave early, or arrive late, do so quietly.
  • Sleeping during class. Stay at home if you want to nap, it’s more comfortable.
  • Carrying on personal conversations while I am lecturing.
  • Not turning off cell phones while in class.
  • Text messaging and reading newspapers during lecture.

Other important information:

  • I do not give extra credit. Don’t ask.
  • I reserve the right to make changes to my syllabus at any time.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to attend class and keep informed on any changes or new information given during lecture.
  • I will not give you my lecture notes if you miss class, ask a peer.
  • If you miss an exam, quiz or other assignment, and you have a valid excuse, you must take the time to come and speak with me IN PERSON. You must bring proof of your valid excuse with you or I will not even consider your request to make up the missed work. I will not respond to emails regarding missed due dates.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to drop classes; I will not drop you after the first week of class. If you decide you do not want to take this class and fail to drop, you will receive a grade of WU at the end of the semester. This grade is the same as an F, but worse because it makes you appear irresponsible.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Learn basic design principles.

2. Demonstrate an understanding of the terminology, tools, and techniques used in graphic design production using.

3. Explain basic concepts function and features when using computer software.

4. Plan and produce effective computer graphics.

5. Create basic computer graphic projects to demonstrate software knowledge.

6. Describe cross platform issues and techniques and file formats for PC and Mac.

STUDENET LEARNING OBJECTIVES

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Compare and understand differences in graphic software packages
  • Know basic features and functions of each software package.
  • Articulate the basic terms used by designers
  • Have a working knowledge of shortcut keys

REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS

· Lynda.com (This is about $25.00 a month)

· Two (2) digital storage devices

· One-inch black binder and plastic page protectors.

· YOU MUST HAVE A LAPTOP AND ADOBE CS SOFTWARE

Costs of laptops vary and may range from $1,000.00 and up.

Software can cost about $400.00 for the complete CS Set

There is no required textbook however, students are required to sign up for Lynda.com (This is about $25.00 a month)

METHODS OF EVALUATION

§ Student’s ability to solve computer graphic problems

§ Projects that demonstrate an understanding of various elements and principles of software skills; as well as, basic design principles.

§ Student’s command of basic features and functions in the different application software programs

§ Portfolio of all course work.

q Demonstrating growth! Are you improving and developing new ideas and skills?

§ Final project of accumulated skills.

§ Failure to submit assignments or late submissions

q Effort, neatness, professional appearance, working diligently and with focus

q Punctuality and handing in all required work on time.

q Class participation: sharing ideas in class discussions and critiques, alertness, following instructions, being respectful and cooperative in the classroom

§ Points will be deducted if you fail to bring required items to class.

Point system:

1,000 possible points

Knowledge of software features = 150 points

Class Projects= 500 points

Final Project= 200 points

Test = 100 points (the tests may be written or special drawing assignments)

Class participation = 50 points

GRADING

Your earned grade will depend on the effort you put into class participation, assignments, quizzes, and your final project. Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the designated date. All written work must be typed, and proofread before it is submitted.

1000 points – 800 = A

800 points – 600 = B

600 points – 500 = C

500 points – 400 = D

400 points – 200 = F

BACKUPS

It is the student's responsibility to backup and save all work. If unable to attend class, it is your responsibility to get the missing assignments from peers.

FINAL PROJECT (It is mandatory that you be in attendance during the final day – no exceptions)

Students are to present examples of their assignments created during the semester in class. I will discuss this in more detail as the final draws near. If you are unable to make a final presentation you will have the option to turn in a six page term paper on a topic approved by instructor several weeks ahead of due date.

QUIZZES

The quizzes will cover material presented in lectures, readings, online materials, and class activities. Quiz dates will be announced one week in advance.

CLASS PARTICIPATION

Participation grades will be determined by 1) the quality and quantity of class exercises and course activities completed and 2) participation in class.
